DESCRIPTION:For the Lovers of the Strange\, Unusual & Bizarre… \nWHEN: Saturday November 14th 10am – 5pm AND Sunday November 15th 10am-5pm \nThe Oddities & Curiosities Expo is the world’s largest traveling oddities event showcasing hand selected vendors\, dealers\, artists and small businesses with all things weird. You’ll find items such as: taxidermy\, preserved specimens\, original artwork\, horror/halloween inspired pieces\, antiques\, handcrafted oddities\, quack medical devices\, creepy clothing\, odd jewelry\, skulls/bones\, funeral collectibles & much more. There is truly something weird for everyone at these shows. All items you see at these shows are legal to own and sustainably sourced. Outside of the curated vendors\, they also host sideshow performers on the main stage all throughout the day PLUS there is the opportunity to learn the craft of taxidermy with classes available during the expo. \nThe O&C Expo provides a safe place for anyone to come and discover new artists\, meet new friends and be surrounded by an amazing community of like-minded people. They pride themselves in being a completely “DIY” run show from start to finish. They find so much joy in being able to provide a place where you can feel at home surrounded by others that share the same interests. They are the first and original traveling event exclusively showcasing oddities vendors and dark artists in the country. They are a one of a kind event and the first to do what they specialize in. SUMMARY:Starling Taxidermy Class with Divya Anantharaman
DESCRIPTION:We are THRILLED to welcome back our friend Divya Anantharaman of Gotham Taxidermy in NYC to teach classes at the shop this fall! Spaces are limited\, so if you’re interested be sure to reserve your spot before they run out! \nWHEN: FRIDAY November 20th \nTIME: 11am – 6pm \nWHERE: 1507 Wilcox Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90028 (Memento Mori Los Angeles) \nClick here for tickets!!\nStudents will learn everything they need to create their very own bird taxidermy mount\, from proper skinning\, degreasing/washing\, to sculpting\, mounting\, and finishing. Students will watch a skinning and fleshing demonstration\, and proceed to work with professionally cleaned\, fleshed\, and tanned skins. This will allow the students to focus on the finer details of creating a finished piece\, and practice specific mounting techniques\, like wiring\, fitting and modifying a form\, sewing\, assembly\, grooming\, and feathering. We will discuss how to use reference and study anatomy practically for taxidermy. \nOur subject will be the European starling. Rumored to have been brought to Central Park by Shakespeare enthusiasts\, they became prolific enough to outdo native birds\, causing substantial destruction to wildlife and crops. However\, their eye-catching plumage-glossy\, spotted\, and iridescent\, brightens up our city. Their unwavering tenacity reflects a larger truth across species\, making the best of a situation they’ve found themselves in. They are one of few birds that are not protected by the MBTA\, and can be legally possessed by individuals as long as local laws are followed. These starlings are legally and sustainably sourced\, no animals are harmed for the sake of taxidermy. \nStudents will go home with their custom-made creations (a starling taxidermy mount on a reusable temporary base) instructions for maintaining their pieces\, and newfound or nourished love of taxidermy. \nAbout the instructor- \nA unique combination of science and style\, Divya Anantharaman is an award winning licensed professional preserving animals with honor and compassion for clients ranging from museums\, designers\, collectors\, and everyday naturalists. Her specialties are birds\, small mammals\, and anatomic anomalies\, with a select number of commissions open for pets. Her work seeks to combine the demonstrative aspect of scientific presentation with the symbolic\, introspective nature of art\, using taxidermy to engage diverse audiences with conservation. She is passionately curious about the untapped potential of this scientific art\, and sharing it with others. Her classes seek to demystify the taxidermy process\, and make the field more accessible and engaging. She has recently starred in the Emmy winning documentary short\, “Rearranging Skin”. In her commitment to conservation\, she regularly volunteers with various ornithological organizations (such as NYC Plover Project and NYC Bird Alliance). You can learn more HERE!
